Amandletu School Bridge: Rising Stronger with NJR Steel

The Amandletu Bridge had long been a vital link for the Amaoti Inanda Community, enabling students, teachers, and community members to access their school, healthcare, and other essential services. However, the catastrophic KwaZulu Natal floods in April 2022 wreaked havoc on the region, causing the bridge to be washed away.

In the wake of these devastating floods the community of was left disconnected from their school, clinic and a home for the elderly. Recognizing the urgency to restore connectivity and ensure the safety of the community, a resilient solution has emerged as the eThekwini Municipality flood relief project.

The Qajana Group was awarded the task of rebuilding the bridge. The collaborative effort of eThekwini Municipality and local businesses showcases the commitment to restoring essential infrastructure and ensuring the safety and connectivity of the residents.

Reinforced Concrete: Building a Resilient Structure

Mr Shezi, a managing member of the Qajana Group spoke of the many challenges faced during the rebuilding period. The biggest challenge was water. Apart from the constant waterflow and heavy rainfall experienced in the area, a river that runs parallel to the bridge had to be diverted using sheet piling.

Steel sheet piles are long structural sections of sheet steel with vertically interlocking edges that are driven into the ground. Sheet piles provide earth retention and excavation support. Sheet piles are most commonly made of steel, but can also be formed of timber and reinforced concrete.

This type of piling system is commonly used for retaining walls, land reclamation, underground structures, such as car parks and basements, and in marine locations for riverbanks, seawalls and so on. Their exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and ease of installation make them a reliable choice for withstanding the forces exerted by potential future floodwaters.

The superstructure of the bridge is being constructed using reinforced concrete, further enhancing its strength and resilience. Reinforced concrete combines the compressive strength of concrete with high tensile strength of steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to create a highly durable material capable of withstanding heavy loads and extreme conditions.

Government and Business Unite to Revitalize Steel and Engineering Sector for Economic Growth

With government and business both looking to infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic recovery, there is consensus on one thing: cooperation will be needed to kick off building projects before growth becomes a reality.

The Steel and Engineering Industry Federation of SA (SEIFSA) agrees that a pro-business agenda was clear in President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address (SONA), and it is hopeful that government's plans to invest in infrastructure development – and support localization – will help the beleaguered steel and engineering sector recover.

President Cyril Ramaphosa met with business leaders in the steel and engineering industries on the 18th of April 2023 to discuss measures that government, the industry and other social partners will take together to grow the sector and ensure its future sustainability.

President Ramaphosa met with the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA) led by Chairperson, Mr Elias Monage, at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. The purpose of the meeting was to deepen engagement between government and this strategic sector of the economy. The meeting was the first direct engagement between a South African Head of State and the sector since SEIFSA’s formation almost 80 years ago.

In the first State of the Nation Address of the 6th Administration, in 2019, President Ramaphosa directed that the sector be given specific focus through the development of a steel and metal fabrication master plan. In June 2021 the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition signed the sector master plan, which provides a blueprint for the industry to revitalize and expand production.

The master plan is a key part of the reimagined industrial strategy which President Ramaphosa has championed to unleash private investment and support inclusive growth.

“The steel sector is at the heart of our economy, as it has a significant multiplier effect and is one of largest job creators in the manufacturing sector. Our infrastructure drive should be the catalyst that propels its recovery and growth. We are determined to build a local steel sector that is strong, competitive and well positioned for the future”, said President Ramaphosa.

The President outlined the actions being taken to achieve energy security, improve the performance of the freight logistics system and tackle corruption and crime, which have received strong support from business leaders. Government and industry representatives discussed opportunities for local steel in the effort to rehabilitate the rail network, expand the national transmission grid and build water infrastructure, as well as the need to invest in skills development.

The SEIFSA leadership expressed its support in working with government and other social partners to address the country’s challenges and unlock investment in the sector.

Projected Increase in Demand for Steel & Value Added Steel Products in 2023

A Hopeful Outlook for South African Steel in African Mining Projects

Engineering News has reported a projected increase in demand for South African value added steel products in mining projects across Africa amid poor service delivery and high transport costs from China, as well as rising political tension between China and Australia.

Adding to this, Bloomberg reports that China will again cut annual crude steel production in 2023, marking the third year in a row that the government has mandated reduced output in order to rein in carbon emissions.

As a result of difficulties with China, Australia-based mine owners are sourcing new suppliers and creating opportunities for local suppliers to meet this demand as well as demand from Africa says export trade promotion agency International Steel Fabricators (ISF) CEO Neels van Niekerk.

Customs data shows a total of 73 484 tons of primary steel products exported by South Africa during December 2022. A decline of 41,4% and 35,7% compared to December 2021 and 2019 respectively. Annual 2022 exports declined by 3,2% and 43,2% compared to the same period in 2021 and 2019 respectively. During 2022, the share of exported primary steel product was as follows: flat products (46,6%), section and bar (26,2%), intermediate products, (21,3%), wire (5,5%), and rail (0,3%).

South Africa exported approximately 867 000 tons of steel to African countries in 2022. Exports were mostly destined to sub-Saharan African countries.

However Van Niekerk tells Engineering News that demand for locally-produced steel structures is expected to surge before the end of the year . “Local suppliers need to bring their offering to the attention of the identified potential clients wherever they are situated to access these opportunities,” enthuses Van Niekerk.

“We have already received numerous requests from all over South Africa and beyond for the sourcing of products listed. Merchant members are now able to load the details of their service offerings while being part of an interactive map, which should reduce the need to interact with the ISF Secretariat,” says Van Niekerk.

The organization aims to increase export volumes of value-added steel structures, mine processing and pressure equipment from its Southern African members and to grow the number of exporters joining the ISF’s endeavors.

National Budget Suggests Further Opportunities for Growth within South Africa

The 2023-24 National Budget also presented some opportunities for the local steel sector that, if realised, would propel steel demand in the local market.

Some of the key announcements were around supporting infrastructure, mainly transport and logistics, water and sanitation, and the construction sector. R903 billion was allocated to infrastructure development over the medium-term expenditure framework. Most of the spending is allocated to transport and logistics (R351.1 billion) and water and sanitation (R132.5 billion). This is a pivotal point for the steel sector, whose performance is driven by investment in infrastructure.

The large-scale “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects already approved include:

R3.8 billion over the medium term for Phase 2 of the Welisizwe Rural Bridges programme which is expected to start in April this year. The plan is to install 96 bridges annually to enable rural communities in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Free State, and North West to safely and more easily access schools and workplaces.

The 488-bed Limpopo Central Hospital which will finally begin construction in March this year.

This is good news for local suppliers and manufacturers in these sectors who can beat loadshedding and create a reliable supply chain for local and international demand.

Iron-ore jumps on China data, bullish steel demand outlook

BEIJING - Iron-ore futures jumped on Wednesday, as better-than-expected China manufacturing activity data raised hopes for a demand rebound in the world's top steel producer.

The most-traded May iron ore futures contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) ended daytime trade 2.42% higher at 908.5 yuan ($131.64) a tonne, after closing about 0.8% lower in the previous session.

On the Singapore Exchange, the benchmark April iron-ore was up 2.17% at $126.05 a tonne, as of 07:03 GMT, extending gains.

China's manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI)climbed to 52.6 last month, the highest reading since April 2012, up from 50.1 in the previous month.

"We believe the better-than-expected data has injected some confidence into the market. Also, the expectation of continued improvement in downstream (steel) demand lent support to the prices of raw materials including iron ore," said Yu Chen, a Shanghai-based senior iron-ore analyst at consultancy Mysteel.

Eskom confirms diesel spend of R18bn and climbing

Eskom CFO Calib Cassim told lawmakers on Tuesday that the State-owned utility had spent R18-billion on diesel for its current financial year-to-date, which began in April last year, and that it would probably need to spend another R4-billion until the end of March, raising the overall diesel spend for the year to R22-billion.

The utility was continuing to operate its diesel-fuelled open-cycle gas turbines (OCGTs) despite having announced in November that it was no longer in a financial position to do so.

AMSA warns of lower full-year earnings amid global, domestic headwinds

The JSE share price of steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) fell by nearly 22% on January 24, after it warned of lower profits for the financial year ended December 31, 2022.

In a trading statement and business update, the steel producer said its earnings per share (EPS) for the financial year were likely to be between R2.20 and R2.50 – a decrease of 58% to 63% compared with the EPS of R5.94 reported for the 2021 financial year.

‘Benguela gem’ diamond recovery vessel shines as overall Steel Awards winner

“While there is tremendous merit across all of our entrants, as well as all our category winners,” enthuses Gebremeskel, “the SAISC Annual Awards judges were unanimous in their praise of our overall winner – which was also the winner of the Mining category – the Benguela General Treatment Plant mining facility, aboard the ‘Benguela Gem’.

The Benguela Gem is owned by Debmarine Namibia, a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers Group and the government of the Republic of Namibia.”

The Benguela Gem is the product of international collaboration: designed in Norway and Poland, built in Romania and fitted out by De Beers Marine South Africa.

This 3000 ton diamond treatment plant is the world’s most advanced diamond recovery vessel, and was completed ahead of schedule. Debmarine diamond recovery takes place at 90 – 150 metres below sea level and is floating as opposed to being stationery and anchored. This presented unique engineering challenges as a sea-faring structure that is able to complete the entire under-sea diamond dredging and treatment process.

The treatment plant was nominated by designers PBA Projects and completed in collaboration with De Beers Marine and 3C Metal Belmet, Namibia and local fabricators Steel Services and Allied Industries.

NJR Steel and Seeds of Africa Help Put An End To Shack Fires

Shack fires have had a deadly and devastating impact on townships across South African. One of the most catastrophic in the country’s history was in Cape Town at Imizamo Yethu, where about 4 500 structures were completely destroyed and approximately 15 000 residents lost their homes and possessions .

This was just one of multiple shack fires that has demolished homes, and raged across informal settlements. But these shack fires can be prevented . And it’s the mission of Milton Mzobe, a Community Leader and Pastor living in Cosmo City.

Milton has been deeply affected by the impact of shack fires on communities, so in 2014 he founded the NPO Akunamlilo Fire Fighters and has partnered with NJR Steel and other organizations for support to supply fire fighting equipment like Fire Extinguishers and Fire Prevention training to nearly 5000 shack owners in informal settlements in Gauteng.

Not only has Milton managed to start, run and maintain a successful NPO that is helping to educate thousands of South Africans on how to prevent fires , along with providing equipment to fight fires before they spread, he is also an inspiring positive role model and example of success to others in those communities.

Milton could not have achieved this without the support, guidance and training of Seeds of Change, one of the growing initiatives of Seeds of Africa which is supported by NJR Steel.

Steel At The Core of A Greener Economy For South Africa

Steel plays an integral role in producing and distributing renewable power , with steel being essential in manufacturing the structures that facilitate the production of renewable energy.

Solar farms, hydro-electric dams, wind turbines and tidal turbines are all steel-intensive infrastructure, specifically in solar and wind power where each new MW of solar power requires between 35 to 45 tons of steel , and each new MW of wind power requires 120 to 180 tons of steel. This highlights how the steel industry is perfectly positioned to reap the benefits from the renewable energy push.

While steel might be considered an emissions-heavy industry, steel is one hundred percent recyclable with a potentially endless lifecycle . It is also the most recycled material in the world.

Considering its usage and lifecycle in the renewable energy sector, steel more than makes up for its carbon footprint over its lifetime. An example is how a three-megawatt wind turbine can deliver 80 times more energy over 20 years than was used in its production and maintenance materials.

Over the last ten years many world-renowned steelmakers have also launched unique products designed for superior strength and high durability . These characteristics are essential for specific-use in solar and wind structures, which are constantly exposed to extreme weather conditions. Surging investments in renewable energy projects in China are also sending a bullish signal to the country’s steel sector, especially regarding steel products suitable for solar and wind power generation structures. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) China dominates the global solar PV supply chain after having invested over $50 billion developing supply capacity.

Currently, China’s share in manufacturing components of solar panels is more than 80%. Even if demand is being created, it will still take time to establish the local capacity to respond to that demand, while also having to compete with low-cost Chinese suppliers.

A Global Push Towards Renewables.

Investment Shifts Towards Renewables

It’s undeniable that a global energy transition is underway with governments and big players in mining, oil, gas and electricity announcing significant investments and strategic moves towards renewable energy growth.

According to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy (2022), our global renewable energy generation has almost doubled in the last ten years with further increases forecast. “ By 2026, global renewable electricity capacity is forecast to rise more than 60% from 2020 levels to over 4 800 GW – equivalent to the current total global power capacity of fossil fuels and nuclear combined .” Says the IEA.

Renewables are set to account for almost 95% of the increase in global power capacity through 2026 , with solar PV alone providing more than half. This is primarily driven by legislated support through government policies and more ambitious clean energy goals announced before and during the COP26 Climate Change Conference.

“This year’s record renewable electricity additions of 290 gigawatts are yet another sign that a new global energy economy is emerging ,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

South Africa’s Renewable Energy Transition

South Africa has seen notable growth in renewable energy funding and focus, specifically since the introduction of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in August 2011.

In three years, South Africa procured more investment in independent power generation than had been achieved across the African continent for the past 20 years (Eberhard et al 2014). The demand is also clear, with load shedding in 2021 overtaking 2020 as the most intensive year of load shedding to date and Eskom making stronger moves towards the renewables market.

While Coal still dominates the South African energy mix, providing just over 81% of the total system load, the contribution of renewable energy technologies increased in 2021 to a total of 5.7 GW installed capacity and provided almost 7% of the total energy mix. This is only the beginning of a determined and incentivised government push towards renewable energy.

Ramaphosa’a Energy Crisis Plan Sparks Change

An important step forward for the South African renewable energy market is the recent announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa, putting in place an Energy Crisis Plan with much needed measures to tackle South Africa's energy gap and to put an end load shedding.

His measures promised to “fundamentally transform” the electricity sector. These range from getting rid of licensing requirements for private energy projects that feed into the electricity grid; to allowing Eskom to buy power from existing independent power producers such as mines and paper mills, and to import power from neighbouring countries; to doubling the power to be procured in round six of the government's renewable energy procurement program.

Certain regulatory requirements will also be waived or streamlined – including the regulatory requirements for solar projects in areas of low and medium environmental sensitivity which further signals positive growth for the local solar market. Government also wants to encourage more businesses and households to opt for rooftop solar PV installations by incentivizing them to sell power to Eskom with the feed-in tariff.

The National Planning Commission (NPC) has also weighed in on the electricity crisis. Its plan calls for 10 000MW of wind and solar power and 5 000MW of battery storage to be built as an urgent priority.

Duncan Wanblad, the South African-born CEO of Anglo American, said the reforms announced by the president add to huge strides the country has made in renewable energy, which will help smooth the way for the Anglo group's highly ambitious energy strategy. The global mining company has announced significant decarbonization plans aimed at carbon-neutrality by 2040, including the planned construction of on-site solar plants and off-site regional wind farms for the development of a renewable energy ecosystem for green hydrogen production in southern Africa.

“This is more than just about energy. This could unlock much bigger opportunities in terms of hydrogen corridors, transport routes, supply chain infrastructure, which would not serve only us, but southern Africa really well,” stated Wanblad in an energy outline presentation in July.

Another boost for local the renewable energy market is major Eskom coal supplier Seriti Resources recently acquiring a 51% stake in renewable energy company Windlab Africa for R892 million. "The acquisition is a timely and strategic addition to our existing and valuable portfolio of coal assets. Our commitment to the responsible and reliable production of coal for both domestic consumption and exports remains unwavering," Seriti CEO Mike Teke said in a statement.

It said that in line with the commitments made in the agreement with Eskom and Exxaro, it will start using renewable wind and solar energy in its own facilities through the signing of power purchase agreements in 2023. "We need to be moving towards a lower carbon future through investing capital from coal into green energy. It is not only the right thing to do, but it makes business and societal sense," said Teke.

In addition to this, The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has registered 16 new renewable generation facilities, which use the new licence exemptions. According to Nersa, 11 of the facilities will generate electricity for their own use, and five will generate for commercial use. Most of the applicants will connect to Eskom's network, while four will connect to municipalities.

The biggest project registered is an 80MW solar plant by Lephalale Solar and will connect to Eskom's grid. Second is the Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm, with a capacity of 72MW, which will also connect to Eskom's grid. Nersa has approved 216 registration applications since the legislative change. The total investment cost is approximately R452 million, Nersa said.
